Basic First Aid Course

You never know when someone might get injured, and knowing what to do when this happens can save a person’s life. During this scholastic year various members of staff have applied for a Basic First Aid Course.  The sessions, which were spread over a period of weeks, were held on the school’s premises after school hours.

 During this Basic First Aid course the participants:

  1. discussed various emergency situations;
  2. learnt about the skills that are needed to manage an emergency situation in a safe way.
  3. were also taught how to assess DANGER for the first aider, bystanders and the casualty.
  4. learnt how to log an emergency call. 
  5. were involved in two practical sessions (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation CPR and Recovery Position).
  6. were also introduced to an AED (Automated External Defibrillator).
  7. learnt what first aid procedures are to be utilised in case of:
  •  Choking,
  • Wounds/bleeding,
  • Fractures, Sprains and Strains,
  • Animal bites,
  • Amputated limbs,
  • Spinal Injuries,
  • Lung injuries,
  • Breathing Difficulties,
  • Chest Pain and Cardiac illness,
  • Stroke,
  • Seizures,
  • Fainting,  Diabetic Emergencies,
  • Anaphylactic Shock,
  • Poisons,
  • Burns,
  • Bites and Stings,
  • Extremes of Temperature (sun stroke, heat exhaustion, hypothermia)
