As part of the Ekoskola project, this scholastic year we joined forces with Dingli Primary School and organised various interesting activities related to planting. At the beginning of the scholastic year, both schools bought the same type of seeds and planted them on the same day. Along the year each school measured the crops so as to compare them. It was an activity where Mathematical skills were included since measurements, numbers and interlocking cubes were used.
Besides, both schools were invited to visit each other school and more activites related to nature were organised. When some students and educators of Zabbar Primary A school were invited at Dingli Primary School, talks with relevant information related to bees and how goat cheese is produced were given. All of us had also the opportunity to taste the delicious goat cheese and honey. Students also discussed which products grow from trees and which grow from soil and also students had the chance to do crafts using leaves and twigs which fall on the ground. Zabbar Primary students had also the chance to look at the various plants and trees planted in the greenhouse and in the school’s yard.
Later on, it was the turn of Dingli Primary School students and educators to visit Zabbar Primary School. Together both schools spent some time in two fields at Zabbar. The farmer explained and showed us various products, described and showed various equipment and machines used while cropping and also mentioned various problems the farmers encounter. The students had also the opportunity to plant broccoli and cauliflower in her fields. After, all students went to Zabbar Primary A school and Zabbar Primary A showed their secret garden to Dingli Primary School and also all the products that the school planted. There it was an opportunity for both schools to compare the crops of each school.
These experiences were fruitful because besides learning more about the environment and nature, all students and staff had the opportunity to get to know each other and learn from each other. Special thanks to Ms E. Galea, the head of school, assistant heads and all the staff and students of Dingli Pirmary School for collaborating with us and for inviting us at their school and also special thanks to all administration, staff and students of Zabbar Primary A for their commitment and hard work.
