Numerical Print
Flashcards containing numbers and pictures were attached at the students’ eye level to continuously expose them to number recognition and numerical value.
Environmental print recognition
The school also invested in Environmental print. It is the print and symbols found in everyday surroundings, like signs, labels, logos, or advertisements. For young children, recognizing these symbols is often one of their first experiences with reading, as they begin to associate the shapes and letters with specific meanings (e.g., associating the golden arches “M” with McDonald’s or a cereal box label with breakfast).
This is an important step in early literacy development because:
- Familiarity: It allows children to connect letters and words with familiar places and objects.
- Pre-literacy skill: Environmental print recognition helps children understand that print carries meaning, even before they can read actual words.
- Motivation: Seeing recognizable symbols encourages children to engage with and decode text, boosting their interest in reading.
It’s a natural part of how kids start learning to read by associating logos and familiar symbols with real-world contexts.
It’s satisfying to see Kinder 1 children look at letters and say them aloud, showing they are beginning to recognize the letters.
School Staircases
Laminated flashcards with letters and numbers were attached to each step of the stairs, making them colourful and promoting numeracy and literacy as students climb the steps.
New Awnings
New awnings were purchased and installed in the inner courtyard to provide shade for students while they play.
First Day Decorations
Several decorations were purchased and placed around the school to welcome the children on their first day back to school.
Painting of classrooms
During the hot summer days, a lot of work was accomplished at our school, with even more classrooms being painted. A big thank you to our handymen for their hard work in painting as many rooms as possible, and to the caretakers who diligently cleaned each classroom after the work was completed.
Installation of electrical supply and fans in the assembly area and the stage
Several fans were installed in the assembly area and the stage. To support this, the necessary electrical supply was also set up.
LED Lighting Installation in Corridors
In each corridor, several LED tube lights and new fittings were installed where necessary.
Installation of a timer bell system & kitchen alarm system
A timer bell system has been installed at our school. A kitchen fire alarm system was also installed to ensure it can be heard throughout the entire school in case of an emergency.
School refurbishing of classrooms
During the summer holidays, the school maintenance staff are performing refurbishments, including plastering and painting, in several ground-floor classrooms.
SCHOOL EMBELLISHMENT ONGOING PROJECT
During the past year. The school has embarked on a decorative detail project to enhance the appearance of our school environment.
The Secret Garden
A secret garden was created in the schoolyard to allow students to plant various seeds and plants, serving both as a botanical space and a dedicated reading area. The garden is enclosed by a fence, which students painted with colours of their choice, discussed during an Ekoskola meeting. Furthermore, umbrellas were purchased to enable activities in the shade within the garden. These umbrellas offer shade to classes enjoying the outdoors during the warmer days.
New stage equipment and stage maintenance
An expensive modern sound system, projector and adjustable screen, lightings and laptop were bought to be used daily during assembly, for weekly special assemblies, for Christmas Concerts etc. Besides, the stage was all re-covered with new turf.
